Accepting delivery of a new car is an exciting moment — but it's also a critical one. The few minutes you spend at the dealership before signing can save you months of frustration later. This guide gives you a complete checklist to verify before you drive away.
1. Documentation Check
- Verify chassis number (VIN) matches invoice and RC book
- Check engine number matches documentation
- Confirm odometer reading is minimal (under 50 km)
- Review all warranty cards and service booklets
- Ensure insurance policy is issued on correct vehicle details
- Check PDI certificate from manufacturer is present
2. Exterior Inspection
- Inspect all panels for dents, scratches, or paint inconsistencies
- Check panel gaps — they should be uniform on all sides
- Examine door edges and boot lid for paint chips
- Look for overspray patterns that indicate prior repainting
- Check all glass for chips, cracks, or distortions
- Verify all lights function — headlights, taillights, indicators
3. Tyre Check
- Check tyre manufacturing date (DOT code) — should be within 12 months
- Verify all 5 tyres are of the same brand and specification (including spare)
- Check tyre pressure
- Inspect tread depth and sidewall condition
4. Engine Bay
- Check engine oil level and condition
- Inspect coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid levels
- Look for any signs of leaks around engine
- Check battery terminals for corrosion
- Verify AC compressor belt condition
5. Interior Check
- Test all power windows, central locking, and mirrors
- Check all seat adjustments and seatbelts
- Verify infotainment system, speakers, and Bluetooth
- Test AC on all modes and blower speeds
- Check all interior trims for loose fittings or poor finish
- Test horn and all dashboard warning lights
6. Test Drive
- Listen for unusual engine, gearbox, or suspension noises
- Test brakes at low and medium speeds
- Check steering for pulls or vibrations
- Test all drive modes if applicable
- Verify speedometer and all instrument cluster functions
